Who needs delivery insurance?
Delivery insurance applies to any business whose vehicles carry goods for commercial purposes. That includes parcel and courier services, e-commerce and retail fulfilment, grocery and meal delivery, and trades and mobile service providers whose vans carry stock and equipment between jobs.
The exposure follows the use of the vehicle rather than the industry name on the door. In Ontario a vehicle registered to a business and driven for business is rated commercially, and a claim arising from commercial use of a vehicle insured on a personal policy is exposed to denial. Businesses whose staff drive their own cars on company errands carry that same exposure without owning a vehicle at all, which is what hired and non-owned auto cover answers.
What can an Ontario delivery insurance policy cover?
What a policy can cover
- Commercial auto: vehicles registered to the business and driven for business purposes
- Cargo: goods carried in the insured vehicle while in transit
- Commercial general liability: third-party bodily injury and property damage arising from operations
- Hired and non-owned auto: liability arising from vehicles the business does not own but directs
- Tools and equipment: theft of or damage to portable tools and equipment away from the premises
- Crime and employee dishonesty: theft of money, securities or stock by employees or third parties
Commonly excluded under standard Ontario delivery insurance wordings
- Vehicles operated by unlicensed or excluded drivers
- Wear, tear and gradual deterioration
- Workplace injury to the business’s own employees, which falls to WSIB coverage in Ontario
- Intentional or fraudulent acts by the insured
- Liquidated damages or penalties accepted under contract
Exclusions vary by insurer and by policy form; the issued policy governs.
Frequently asked questions
Does personal auto insurance cover delivery driving?
A personal auto policy in Ontario is rated for personal use. Carrying goods for commercial purposes falls outside that rating, and a claim arising while making deliveries on a personal policy is exposed to denial. Commercial auto is the correct contract.
What is hired and non-owned auto cover?
Hired and non-owned auto answers liability arising from vehicles a business directs but does not own: rented vans and employees using their own cars on company business. The exposure sits with the business regardless of who holds the vehicle registration.
Is the cargo covered as well as the van?
Cargo cover insures the goods carried in the vehicle while in transit, and is written separately from the physical damage cover on the vehicle itself. Limits are set against the value of a typical load rather than an annual figure.
