Do I have to add my G1 driver to my insurance?

A G1 holder in the household is disclosed to the insurer, because insurers require every licensed driver in a home to be declared. A G1 cannot drive unaccompanied, so adding one does not usually change the premium. Sutherland Insurance arranges auto insurance across Ontario from Guelph.

The short answer

Disclosure and rating are two different things. The licence is declared when it is issued; the premium generally moves at G2, when the driver can drive alone.

Why does the insurer need to know at G1?

Because the policy is rated on who lives in the household and holds a licence, not only on who drives most. A G1 must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver under Ontario's graduated licensing rules, which is why the licence is recorded without usually affecting the price.

The date the licence was first issued also matters later. Insurers rate partly on licensing history, so a G1 recorded at the time it was issued builds that history from the correct date.

At G2 the position changes, because the driver can then drive alone and the exposure is real.

What does this mean for a household in Ontario?

Declaring the licence when it is issued costs nothing in premium terms and keeps the policy accurate. Not declaring it is a misrepresentation that surfaces when a claim is made.

A broker can confirm how a particular insurer treats G1 and G2 drivers, because the treatment differs between companies.

These are the options. The right mix depends on the situation

The coverages above are the options generally available on an Ontario auto insurance policy. Which of them belongs on any particular policy depends on the property, the people insured, the limits selected and the individual insurer's wording. The policy document itself always governs.
